Ethical Storytelling Workshop

Creating impactful and responsible

stories to move your organization’s mission.

Does your organization want to do a better job of finding, telling and sharing the stories of the people you serve in a respectful, responsible and ethical way? My colleague Lokyee Au and I have co-created a whole workshop dedicated to it called “Ethical Storytelling.” We’ve been offering it to current clients, but are now opening it up to other interested organizations. Program/client service, development, communications, and leadership teams can all benefit from this workshop!

A preview of what to expect…

10 things to do when gathering a story:

  1. Interviewees are the hero of the story; not the organization

  2. Compensate people with lived experience - Gift cards or cash

  3. Let subjects tell their story and share as little or as much as they want

  4. Understand power dynamics of asking program participants about their story

  5. Get written consent to capture and share story

  6. Be clear about where the story will be used and for what purpose

  7. Follow up with interviewees to make sure you captured the story accurately, share final story, remind how stories will be used
